What are hand controls?

Hand controls for mobility cars are specialised devices designed to enable individuals with limited or no lower limb function to operate a vehicle safely and independently. These controls typically replace the conventional foot pedals, allowing the driver to accelerate, brake, and control the vehicle using their hands. The most common types of hand controls include hand levers for acceleration and braking, as well as additional features such as steering aids and secondary controls.

These adaptations are crucial for individuals with mobility impairments providing them with the freedom and autonomy to drive and navigate their daily lives. Hand controls play a vital role in making mobility cars accessible and inclusive, contributing to the empowerment and increased mobility of individuals with physical challenges.

Who can benefit from Hand controls?

Hand controls contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of life for people with diverse physical challenges, enabling them to engage in everyday activities like commuting, running errands, and participating more actively in their communities. We work with individuals facing challenges related to:

What is the process of getting hand controls in my vehicle?

1. Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment

The first step is to undergo an assessment with a driver-trained Occupational Therapist (OT). This evaluation will determine your suitability for hand controls and help identify the most appropriate type for your needs. The OT will also provide the necessary documentation for funding applications and the engineering process involved in modifying your vehicle.

2. Driver Training

Following the assessment, you'll need to undertake driver training using a dual-controlled vehicle equipped with the recommended hand controls. This training ensures you're comfortable and proficient with the new driving aids to then be later assessed and approved to use.

3. Obtaining/Updating your Licence

After completing your training, you'll be required to either:

  • Undergo a follow-up OT driving assessment, or
  • Sit for a driving test through Access Canberra or Service NSW, depending on where your license is issued. Normally it’s the first option if you have already had your licence for sometime.

Please note, your current driver's license doesn't have any conditions. However, post-assessment, it's common for certain conditions to be added, such as:

  • Requirement to use hand controls, or Must drive with a driving instructor in a dual-controlled vehicle These conditions can be reviewed and potentially removed after a subsequent OT driving assessment.

4. Vehicle Modification

Once you have achieved the necessary licencing, your vehicle can be fitted with the appropriate hand controls:

  • Engineering certification to ensure the modifications meet safety standards
  • Inspection and approval by the ACT Government

This all ensures your vehicle complies with all regulatory requirements as well as safety standards for modified vehicles.
